Cost of Service
An important consideration for a parent/agency considering a referral to the Youth-at-Risk program is cost.
- Ministry of Children & Youth
Services regulated rate for child welfare agency
placements - $251.69 per diem
- Private-pay - $251.69 per day.
These rates are highly competitive to standard group care programs of comparable quality. For more information on comparing cost of service - refer to our "Frequently Asked Questions" page.
Guidelines for Selection
This intensive therapeutic adventure program offers an excellent placement option where the young person's behaviour has lead to him becoming unmanageable within the parental home, a foster home or group care placement and the objective is to provide the young person with an environment that focuses on the development of pro-social skills/attitude and improved self-confidence to meet life's challenges.
Must be a male youth aged 14-17 yrs.
Motivation to attend IS NOT a requirement, but is preferable.
Guidelines for Exclusion
This program is usually not suitable for youth who have a history of being assaultive against authority figures or a protracted history of highly destructive conduct, serious mental illness, recent suicidal behaviour or exceptionally low cognitive capabilities.
Other criteria which may lead to a referral being deemed not appropriate:
The youth is assessed as a high risk of AWOL;
The youth has a history of setting fires;
The youth has severe food allergies;
If the youth has a life-threatening allergy to insect bites he will not be accepted into the program April 1st to October 31st.
Non-swimmers may not be accepted into the program between April 1 and October 31;
The youth does not pass a medical examination (ie. - deemed medically unfit to engage in a physically demanding program such as Project DARE by a medical doctor).
Medical
The youth must undergo a medical examination conducted by a Physician prior to acceptance into the program which must be documented on the Project D.A.R.E. Medical Information and Consent form and signed off by the Physician and parents/guardian.
The medical does not need to be completed prior to initiating a referral to Project D.A.R.E. Children's facilities are exempt from third party billing for medical exams. Project D.A.R.E. will not reimburse for costs incurred for medical exams.

The final decision to admit a student to Project D.A.R.E. is based on a review of the referral information and results of an interview. Other factors considered include program capacity and current group dynamics within the student groups.
The student may either be transported to Project D.A.R.E. by the parent/guardian or facility where he has previously been placed, or arrangements may be made with Project D.A.R.E. to provide intake transportation.
